Community Planting Days

June 1 & 2 and June 8 & 9, 2024

The Hidden Valley Conservation Trust invites you to join us on one of our Community Planting Days!

This is a great opportunity to visit Hidden Valley, meet our supporters and get involved with conservation in Christchurch. We will be planting native trees grown from locally sourced seeds on grassland on the lower slopes of the reserve. These trees will serve to stabilise the hillside, form a firebreak and enhance soil and water conservation.

We hope to expand last year’s planting area by adding several hundred more trees and are looking for helpers to join us!

We will be running four planting days this year: Saturday and Sunday the 1st and 2nd of June (King’s birthday weekend) and Saturday and Sunday the 8th and 9th of June 2024. To register, please email your names, email address and contact phone number to morisonnz@gmail.com, along with the date(s) you would like to attend. We will send you the map and meeting details.

Each planting will start at 9.30am and likely go through to early to mid afternoon or when the plants are planted, but there is no compulsion to stay till the end! Morning tea will be provided, please bring lunch and drinks. Sturdy footwear is a must, prepare for all weather (the show will go on in light rain but we will cancel if unsafe). You are welcome to bring along spades and grubbers/ mattocks if you have them.

There is a 15 minute uphill walk from the road to the planting site. There will be a basic toilet near the site. Please note that while supervised young people are welcome, there is an unfenced pond near the planting site, and due to the ruggedness of the terrain this is probably not a good activity for small children.

Any questions don’t hesitate to contact us.

Jo and Ken Morison
